Get Ready: Confirmation Classes Starting Soon

It's that time of year again -- time for middle schoolers and their parents to start thinking about confirmation class! All middle school youth who have not been confirmed at St. Paul's will receive a letter during the first week of January inviting them to be a part of the class. Please read this letter and talk with your child about this opportunity. This is a big step for young people and a wonderful opportunity to receive them as adults into the church.

Confirmation class is held Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m., beginning February 9 and continuing for the five Saturdays following. The Bishop will confirm the class on April 7. It is very important that you can attend the classes (and of course the April 7 Bishop's Visit), so please make note of them now.

The letter will outline more details, but please email ellen@stpaulsalexandria.com if you have any questions or are interested in confirmation class.

Annual Epiphany Pageant

Please join us on January 6 at the 9 a.m. service for our annual Epiphany Pageant. This short remembrance of the end of the Christmas season is a fun way to mark the arrival of the Three Kings. Part of the day is bringing gifts for the Christ child (diapers, bottles, canned goods, etc.) which we will pass out through our Lazarus Ministry.

A message from the Angel Team: Thank you, St. Paul's!

Angel Tree 2012

On behalf of the Angel Team, we wish to thank the entire St. Paul's congregation for its generosity and support of the 2012 Angel Tree Program. We want to especially thank our "secret" angel whose donation enabled us to buy bikes for all of the children who asked for one as well as provide inflatable beds, a crib, an air purifier and coats for all. Our heartfelt thanks to all for your gifts, gift cards, and donations to the Angel Tree Fund to help us fill in where needed.

The 2012 Angel Tree Program provided gifts to approximately 185 children, adults, and seniors in Alexandria through the
Department of Human Services Holiday Sharing Program, a classroom at Child and Family Network Centers, and the St. Paul's Head Start classroom. We made the holidays special for 103 children, 72 adults, and 10 senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Donations of gifts totaled between $25,000 - $30,000 and close to $3,500 in gift cards were given.

The Angel Team worked tirelessly for several weeks and collectively put in more than 500 hours to distribute the angels, stars & hearts, collect the gifts, sort through all angel bags, shop and shop again to fill in bags, wrap the gifts which needed to be wrapped, label all bags, and then ultimately, deliver all gifts this past Monday.

2013 Latrobe Lecture: The Precocious Infancy of St. Paul's Church

The St. Paul’s Foundation will welcome The Reverend John Ander Runkle, R.A., a specialist in religious architecture, to deliver the Latrobe Lecture.

Since 1996, the St. Paul’s Foundation has hosted the Latrobe Lecture, named for Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect of St. Paul’s. Mr. Latrobe played a significant role in the design and building of St. Paul’s Church, which was built in 1817. Past lectures have focused on historical architecture and specifically on the life and works of Benjamin Henry Latrobe.

Fr. Runkle has served a number of parishes in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee since being ordained in 1999, he presently is on the staff of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Va. He also serves as the Canon for Architecture and the Arts in the Diocese of Washington. As an historical architect, his career represents a devotion to the care and interpretation of architectural and cultural landmarks.

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, January 16, at 7 p.m. for Fr. Runkle’s lecture, “The Precocious Infancy of St. Paul’s Church,” and at a reception afterwards. Please look for an invitation soon and mark your calendars for an evening that is sure to enlighten and engage all who attend.

Epiphany Evensong

On Sunday, January 6, at 7:30 p.m., St. Paul's will celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany with an Evensong. The St. Paul’s Choir will sing music by Byrd, Ayleward, Wood, and Mendelssohn. The three Magi will visit. Donations will be taken of non-perishable food items to benefit the Lazarus Ministry.

Thank you, St. Paul's Foundation!

Did you notice how nice and sparkling clean the outside of the church looks? The St. Paul's Foundation helps us to look our best during a season when we welcome many visitors and guests, as well as all year round. The Foundation's mission is to maintain the historic buildings and grounds of our parish and they saw to it that the façade received a thorough cleaning. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

Faith@Home: Table Graces

Compiled by Rosemary Beales

For what we are about to receive
May we be truly grateful. Amen.

Lord, thank you
for the food before us
and the love between us.
Keep us ever mindful
Of the needs of others. Amen.

For this new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food,
For love and friends,
For every gift your goodness sends,
We thank you, gracious God. Amen.

We close our eyes,
We bow our heads,
And offer thanks
For daily bread. Amen.

Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you, God, for everything. Amen.

Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gifts
Which we are about to receive
From thy bounty,
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

We thank you, Lord, for happy hearts,
For rain and sunny weather,
We thank you, Lord, for this our food,
And that we are together.

(sung)
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise him, all creatures here below,
Praise him above, ye heav’nly host,
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Amen.

Without thy sunshine and thy rain,
We would not have the golden rain.
Without Thy love we’d not be fed,
We thank Thee for our daily bread.

Lord,
Bless this food to our use
And our lives to your service. Amen.

Food, oh God, is your love made edible.
May we be swept into your presence.

O God, bless this food
we are about to receive.
Give bread to those who hunger;
And hunger for justice to us who have bread.
Amen.

God of pilgrims,
Give us always a table to stop at
Where we can tell our story
And sing our song. Amen.

A Quaker grace:
(Everyone at the table joins hands for a silent moment.)

Faith@Home: Spiritual Practices for Families

The following practices constitute a “menu” from which you are invited to select an activity each week. You may also consider ideas not on this menu from your own tradition, such as Catholic Rosary, etc. The goal is to establish a new habit that may become a lasting part of family ritual.
  • Say grace before meals.
  • Take a “thank you, God” walk around your neighborhood. Point out schools, offices, trash trucks, and be thankful about all the people around you.
  • Sing with your children – use a song you often sing at church or ask them to teach you a song from school. Camp or scouting songs are good, too!
  • In the evening, take turns sharing one grace and one disappointment of the day, share highs and lows.
  • Draw, paint, or work with clay together with your child.
  • Perform a deed of service with your child(ren).
  • Share some silence -- as an invitation, not a command. Start with 20 seconds, then share what each of you has noticed. Work up to a minute or more.
  • Talk about giving money to church or a helping agency. Set up a system for children to give their own offerings.
  • Attend Saturday or Sunday worship, and reflect on it together afterward. Talk about what you and your child(ren) liked, what was most important, what you would like to leave out, etc.
  • Select a Bible story to read or tell each night this week.
  • Select a Bible verse for each family member to memorize and carry around with them this week (or provide a basket of possibilities for them to choose).
  • Learn prayers in sign language or create your own actions to prayers.
  • Bless your child with touch and simple prayer as you part each morning.
  • Tell family stories – not necessarily religious in nature, just family stories.
  • Walk a labyrinth in the neighborhood, create one in your backyard, or use a finger sand labyrinth or a pocket version. Notice how it makes you feel and talk about it.
  • Set up a prayer basket in your home where family members can write prayers of thanksgiving or petition. Read prayers out loud (unless they’re marked “private”) at dinner or bedtime so all can pray for each other’s intentions.
  • Pray together – use your own words and/or the Lord’s Prayer.
  • Set up a home “altar” where the seasonal color is displayed, flowers and/or a cross are placed, etc. Or use napkins or tablecloth in the liturgical color.
  • Read a book together that stimulates “God-talk.”
  • Light your child’s baptismal candle (or any candle) on the anniversary of his/her baptism. You might want to look at pictures of the event, or just tell what you and s/he remember. Talk about your child’s name – and yours. Names are very important in the Bible — and in life!

Faith@Home for Advent

The Advent season is approaching, and we think this is a wonderful time to begin cultivating and encouraging all of our Faith@Home practices. We have several families who have been participating in practices at home with their families and are preparing to present you their experiences.

The following online resources are available to help you learn about Faith@Home and incorporate it into your family.

Spark Family is a quarterly subscription designed to help families fit faith into everyday life.

Sabbath in the Suburbs: For one year, a family committed to a practice of Sabbath-keeping. For a whole day each week, they set aside their doing in order to simply be. Work took a backseat to games, walks, Legos, naps, homebrewing, and leisurely contentment. The practice never got easier---the house was a mess, the kids still fought--but Sabbath became the one essential "to-do" each week.”

Daily Online Devotionals are written for young people by adults who work with students. With short scripture and reflections, this is a great site for your own daily devotions.

Forward Day by Day, daily devotionals for adults

Bread, Not Stones is a Presbyterian pastor’s blog about “feeding the spiritual lives of children” also contains articles and thoughts on faith for families.

Candle Press resources assist families with young children, including seasonal booklets for children and families to better understand worship and prayer.

Advent Calendars for families use scripture and images of the nativity to tell the real meaning of Christmas

Vibrant Faith@Home is an app with options for all ages to discover prayer, daily devotions, bible study, and other stories of faith. “unlimited access to easy-to-use tools, tips, family activities and advice” to form “a stronger, more faith-focused family.”

The Pray-as-you-go Podcast turns your MP3 player into a mobile mini-retreat, with daily music, scripture readings and reflection question to engage your senses and support your prayer life.

Several children’s books can help children and families better understand worship and faith in your daily life:

St. Paul's Men "Stirred to Action"

On Monday, November 12, over 150 of the men of St. Paul’s gathered at the Virginia Theological Seminary’s refectory for dinner and an inspirational program. The “Stirred to Action” event was planned not only for fellowship, but to serve as a springboard for greater involvement in the life of the church and community. As a memento of the occasion, each attendee received an official St. Paul’s tie created by Vineyard Vines specifically for the event.

Thanksgoween

What is Thanksgoween?

Thanksgoween combines the best parts of Thanksgiving (huge turkey dinner) with the best parts of Halloween (costumes) and benefits the St. Paul's Lazarus Ministry. Thanksgoween is sponsored by the St. Paul's Unencumbered and St. Paul's Beefeaters.

Rules and Traditions

  • Bring a dish to add to the Thanksgoween potluck dinner.
  • You must wear a costume. If you aren't wearing a costume, you will be provided a costume or make one from construction paper and scissors.
  • Costumes should be loosely associated with Thanksgiving. The looser the ties, the more frequently hilarious.
  • Prizes will be given for the best and worst costumes. Since we live in a world of order and this is a democracy, everyone gets one vote for every can of food they bring in for the Lazarus pantry. The goal: To shovel at least an average Beefeater's body weight in canned goods into the Lazarus pantry.

Details

Contact Paul Schurke at paul.w.schurke@gmail.com for more information and to reserve your spot. Please RSVP by Friday, November 2.

Thanksgoween is the celebration of the season. Don't miss out on all the fun and a chance to support Lazarus ministry.

Photo Album: Art on the Avenue

It was a great turnout for pumpkin painting at Del Ray's Art on the Avenue festival on October 6!
Art on the Avenue 2012

Lots of people say Art on the Avenue is their "all-time, absolute, hands-down favorite things to do in Alexandria." The near-overwhelming amount of art and jewelry vendors, plus local food offerings and multiple live music stages makes this a day well-spent.

Photo Album: Blessing of the Animals

All creatures, great and small, came to St. Paul's playground on September 30 for the Blessing of the Animals. Pets of all sizes, shapes and kinds received a blessing for good health and good behavior. We also remembered by  name our animal friends who died in the past year.

Also sharing the day with us was the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, which provides care for more than 3,500 animals every year--strays, lost pets, local wildlife, rescue animals, and pets surrendered by their owners. You can make a difference in the life of a homeless animal by giving them a forever home. Please contact www.AlexandriaAnimals.org.

VTS Dean Ian Markham on Diane Rehm Show

Today at 11 AM on WAMU's Diane Rehm show, Virginia Theological Seminary dean The Very Rev. Ian Markham will participate in a panel to discuss the impact of Vatican II:

"When the Second Vatican Council opened 50 years ago this month, many called it the most important religious event of the 20th century. The council expanded church teaching on ecumenism and religious freedom, and had a major impact on liturgy and church life. But its repercussions reached far beyond the Catholic Church. Champions of Vatican II often see it as having liberated Catholics from the oppression of church leaders. Detractors blame it for shattering unity and order in the church -- and introducing an era of doubt."

Beefeaters Success!

A Note from parishoner, Corinne Marasco:

I am happy to announce that this past Saturday's fundraiser at 1823 for the Renk Basic School was a huge success!! We raised $905, enough to fund 3 students to attend school this academic year.

A good education is easy in Northern Virginia. A good education in Southern Sudan, not so. Without a literate population, it will be difficult for South Sudan to achieve its potential as a democracy. Participation in local and national governance is necessary for developing a democratic society and that can't happen if the people--especially girls and women who have kept the country going through war, famine and genocide--are unable to read and write.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended! I'm grateful for your participation and your generosity.

Return of the Catharine wheel Window

As you have probably already noticed, the restoration of the Catharine wheel window is now complete and was reinstalled this week. This was the latest of the window restorations undertaken by the St. Paul’s Foundation, and was completed in honor of John O. von Hemert (12th rector of St. Paul’s) and his wife Toby in recognition of their long and faithful service to our community.  A memorial plaque and service of dedication will happen later this year. The St. Paul’s Foundation wishes to thank all the families who contributed to this effort and invites others to participate in the ongoing work of restoration. To find out how you can help please contact the parish office, 703-549-3312, ext. 21, and speak with Maria Halloran, Stewardship Director.
